Collection & Design Description

Qing Dynasty, Giuseppe Castiglione's Painting of Flowers in a Vase

Giuseppe Castiglione, an Italian Jesuit missionary painter, came to China at the age of 27 in the 54th year of Kangxi's reign to preach, and was summoned to serve in the imperial court. He was skilled at painting figures and birds, especially horses. He painted peonies with varying shades of color to create a sense of depth, with realistic depictions of the front and back of leaves and their veins, giving them a strong three-dimensional quality. The vase holds rare twin peonies, symbolizing auspiciousness, good fortune, peace, and prosperity. Through ARTEX's over 30 years of design experience and manufacturing techniques, the painting is re-created on the pen and notebook using transfer printing and silk screen printing. Simple lines outline the peonies on the rollerball pen body, without overly complex colors, using only white lines to highlight the magnificence of the peonies. For the notebook, the deconstructed peonies are presented in an interwoven, illusory, and real manner, emphasizing the three-dimensional and layered qualities of the original work. The specially made rose gold metallic frame further enhances the auspicious meaning of wealth and prosperity.
