[Painting Flowers in a Vase]

Qing Dynasty, Giuseppe Castiglione

Giuseppe Castiglione, an Italian Jesuit missionary painter, was Italian. At the age of 19, he joined the Catholic Society of Jesus as a novice, studying painting and architecture. In the 54th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign, at the age of 27, he came to China as a missionary and was summoned to serve in the imperial court. He excelled at painting figures and birds and flowers, especially horses. He painted peonies using shades of color to create a sense of depth, with the fronts and backs of the leaves clearly delineated and the veins realistically rendered, giving them a strong three-dimensional effect. The vase contains rare twin-flowered and intergrown peonies, symbolizing auspiciousness, good fortune, peace, and prosperity.

ARTEX x The Forbidden City Glazed Pen and Ink Series

[ Sky Blue Glazed Gold-Painted Revolving Fish Vase ]

Qianlong Period, Qing Dynasty, 1736-1795 AD

This revolving vase features a constricted mouth with a rolled rim, a long neck, broad shoulders, a tapered belly, and a short foot ring. Four ring handles adorn the shoulders. The vase comprises an inner and outer layer. The inner layer is glazed in a light celadon-green hue, depicting a lake-like background, within which water plants, falling blossoms, and goldfish are painted in famille rose enamels. The outer bottom of the vessel is covered in a celadon-green glaze and bears a "Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi" (Made in the Great Qing Qianlong Period) mark in blue and white seal script. The outer vase has four openwork panels on its belly. The viewer can hold and rotate the vase by the neck, observing the water plants and fish motifs painted on the inner vase through the outer vase's openwork, creating an illusion of fish swimming playfully before their eyes, much like a "magic lantern." Hence, it is named "revolving vase."
